If there's one thing I'll never tire of, it's granny squares. They are quick to make, endlessly customizable, and a fantastic way to use up yarn scraps while still creating something beautiful.

Today, I'm excited to share my version of the Sunburst Granny Square. This soft, textured design is perfect for blankets, cardigans, and home decor.
You might already be familiar with my Willow Granny Square, which has become a favorite here on the blog. The Sunburst square is just as satisfying to make; it's simple enough for beginners, yet the polished finish makes it look more advanced than it really is.
This project is perfect for beginners, too. The stitches are basic, and the repetitive rounds create a meditative experience. The best part? Once you get the hang of it, you can finish one in under 15 minutes. How addictive is that?

Materials
For this project, I used a 4.5 mm crochet hook and one of my favorite yarns from Sandnes Garn, their soft, springy Merinoull. This yarn gives the square a lovely drape while keeping the stitches defined and warm to the touch. Below, you'll find a complete step-by-step video tutorial and written pattern to follow along at your own pace, whether you're making a cozy blanket or piecing together a cardigan (which is my plan!). This square is a must-try.

Color Ideas
- Classic sunburst: brown center, warm yellow, cream, neutral background
- Modern look: muted tones like sage, clay, and off-white
- Scrap version: one new color per round
- Seasonal: sunflower shades for autumn or soft pastels for spring
Even simple color choices look impressive thanks to the texture.

How to Use Sunburst Granny Squares
Once you’ve made a few, the possibilities open up fast:
- Blankets (joined as-you-go or seamed later)
- Cushion covers
- Tote bags
- Cardigans and vests
- Baby blankets
They also look beautiful mixed with solid granny squares for balance.

The Sunburst Granny Square
The Sunburst Granny Square is a textured and playful twist on the classic granny square. It starts with a round center, builds beautiful dimension with puff and cluster stitches, and finishes by turning the circle into a square.
This pattern is easy to follow and works well for both beginners and experienced crocheters who want a relaxing project with lots of visual impact. Each round adds something new, making it a great choice for using multiple colors or leftover yarn.
The finished square is perfect for blankets, bags, cushions, and garments, and it looks just as good on its own as it does joined with other granny squares.
