Crochet Cowl - Vinterkos

Hello friends! I am so happy to introduce my latest pattern, a chunky, cozy winter crochet cowl! I have decided to name this crochet cowl "Vinterkos" after the Norwegian words winter and cozy. Cozy is exactly what it is, because it is so warm, soft and chunky! You're gonna love it!

I am looking forward to colder weather so I can start to wear this soft crochet cowl! It has such a nice drape and I am telling ya, it is all about the yarn! So no matter what kind of yarn you are going for, make sure it has a nice wool and acrylic blend (only acrylic will work too), so you can get a nice drape too. One of my dear tester started to make one with 100% wool and it did NOT drape nicely, so make sure that you pic the right yarn for this project.

You don't have to pic a chunky yarn like I did, because I have included how to adjust the size in the pattern. Some testers made the cowl using a thinner yarn, at that worked out well too.

I also made a crochet cowl with grey, alpaca yarn. It is very soft and will keep somebody warm in the winter! I used a thinner yarn and a smaller hook. I am explaining in the pattern how you can adjust the size.

If you are looking for other crochet cowl patterns, check out the cowl that I made last year. Is is a man's cowl, but you can also make it for women!

Information about the pattern.

The cowl is made in rounds, sl st to join each round. In each round the first ch counts as a stitch (sc, hdc, or dc). First you make a long chain and sl st together to form a ring. To make your cowl bigger, just add more chains but keep it in a multiple of 2. So, if you have thinner yarn you can easily adjust the pattern by adding more chains. To make it higher, simply add more rounds. Instructions in the pattern.

Chain 46, sl st in the first stitch to form a ring. Make sure that the chain doesn’t twist. Watch this video for a great tip on how to avoid twists in the starting chain

You can also make a single crochet foundation chain. This makes the foundation chain more stretchable and the bottom chain won't be so tight. I recommend this method!

Rnd 1) Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc), 1 sc in each stitch, sl st in top of ch 1. (46 sc)

Rnd 2) Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc + 1 ch) 1 hdc in the same sc, skip next sc, *1 hdc, 1 ch, 1 hdc in next sc, skip 1 sc * Repeat all around. Sl st in top of chain 2. (23 groups of “1hdc,1 ch1 hdc”).

Rnd 3) Sl st in the next ch 1 sp. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc2tog in the same ch 1 sp, ch 1 *dc3tog in the next ch 1 sp, ch 1* Repeat all around. Sl st in top of ch 3 (“23 groups of dc3tog, 23 ch 1”).

Round 4) Sl st in the next ch 1 sp: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc+ 1 ch) 1 hdc in the same sc, skip next dc3tog, *1 hdc, 1 ch, 1 hdc in next ch sp, skip 1 dc3tog * Repeat around. Sl st on top of chain 2. (23 groups of “1hdc,1 ch1 hdc”).

Rnd 5) As row 3. (23 groups of dc3tog, 23 ch yes, it).

Rnd 6) As row 4. (23groups of “1hdc,1 ch1 hdc”)

Repeat rounds 3-4 for 5 more rounds, or as many as you wish. End with a 4 rnd repeat.

To finish the cowl, we are doing the reverse single crochet, also known as the crab stitch, around the bottom and the top row of the cowl. Here is a video on how to do the crab stitch.

Finish: Ch 1, and do 1 crab stitch in each stitch around the bottom and the top of the cowl. Finish with a sl st in the first stitch in the chain 1.

When you are doing the bottom of the cowl, fasten yarn wherever you see fit and repeat the process. Weave in all ends.

Extra help

The crab stitch Do not turn your work as normal. Chain 1, insert the hook in the next stitch to the right from your chain 1 and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops. It’s like a normal single crochet but it is being crocheted in reverse. See video above.
