The materials

For this crochet hen, I used Chanelle yarn. The body is made of beige yarn, and I used red for the comb and orange for the beak. I also used 8 mm safety eyes, but you can also embroider the eyes with some black yarn. The eyes on my hens are glued on. In addition, you will need some filling materials.

  • St(s)–stitches
  • Inc–increase
  • dec - decrease
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc-double crochet
  • mr–magic ring
  • sl st- slip stitch

Instructions

    Body

All parts are made in continuous rounds. You can use a stitch marker and move it up as you go.

Color A

Rnd 1: 6sc into a mr (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6 (18 sc)

Rnd 4: (2 sc, sc inc) x 6 (24 sc)

Rnd 5: (3 sc, sc inc) x 6 (30 sc)

Rnd 6-10: 1 sc in each st for 5 rounds.

Rnd 11: (3 sc, sc dec) x 6 (24 sc)

Add stuffing.

Rnd 12: (2 sc, sc dec) x 6 = (18 sc)

Sl st into the first stitch and fasten off. Leave a longer tail for sewing.

Stuff the body with fiberfill.

Now you have an open hole. Press the sides together. Sew up half of the open stitches using a needle to shape the tail. Leave 6 sc spaces open (3 pairs, with 6 single crochet stitches in total). Fasten off and weave in ends.

Attach safety eyes or embroider them on the hen on rows 11-12.

If you are using safety eyes, I recommend gluing them on. If you glue them on, make the comb before attaching the safety eyes.

Comb

With color B:

Attach the red yarn on the single crochet where you closed the hole.

Pinch the hole together and go through both sides. You have 6 stitches left, making it 3 pairs.

1 sc in the first pair of sts, 3 dc into the next 2 pair of sts. Fasten off and weave in the ends. See photos for reference.

Sew the beak on using orange yarn (color C).
