Crochet market bag for your everyday needs
The crochet market bag was designed to fit your vegetables or other necessities. Because it is made with cotton yarn, it is strong and durable and has a medium size. However, you can easily adjust the size by adding more or fewer rounds in the beginning to fit your needs.
Even though it is not a beginner’s project, this modern market bag is not hard to make. After the bottom is made, we are working with a pattern that has two repeating rows. You just repeat these two rows until you are happy with the size.
A prefect, mindless project that you can finish watching your favourite tv show.
This is my first crochet market bag design and I am very happy how it turned out. To make the bag more interesting, I worked with different colors and added some small flowers on the top.
Add that little extra with flowers
Since it’s summer, I used a blue and green color and a little pink for the flowers. If you are making this in fall, you can add more fall colors, like orange or so. I bet that would look pretty too!
The marked bag looks so much better with these flowers, I find! Such a fun and quick summer project too!
I recommending using the same yarn, or the same weight for the flowers as for the crochet market bag.
You can also try and add the Flora flower for a bigger flower.

Yarn and materials
I recommend using cotton yarn for this market bag. Cotton fibers are very durable and will ensure that the bag can carry the weight of your groceries without losing the shape.
I used Drops Muskat for this project but if you don’t find this yarn in your country, there are other, similar yarns that you can try. Check out this yarn from Knit Picks. This is an organic cotton sports weight yarn that is similar to Drops Muskat.
Blocking the market bag
I do recommend that you block this project after you are done. The stitches are getting more defined and they will stay that way if you block it. Just soak it water and pin it to a rug or something and let it dry.

Information about this pattern
The bag is made from bottom up. The bottom part consists of double crochet stitches made in joining rounds.
The stitch pattern is made up of two rows that are repeated until the bag is big enough.
On rounds 10-11 we are skipping the chain 2 and 3 spaces.
For advanced crocheters: If you prefer a bigger bag just keep adding more rounds before the stitch pattern starts. (rounds 10-11). Just increase in a multiple of 12 if you want to make it larger.
Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
The market bag and the flowers are made with a 3.5 mm
Size: About 20 x 37 cm (8x31 inches) without the handle.
Instructions
Market bag
The chain 2 in the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. The chain 4 after round 8 counts as one treble.
In color of choice and 4 mm crochet hook.
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring or chain 4 and sl st to the first dc to join. 12 dc in the ring. Join first dc, ch 2 = 12 dc
Rnd 2: dc inc in every st. Join first dc, ch 2 = 24 dc
Rnd 3: (1 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 36 dc
Rnd 4: (2 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 48 dc
Rnd 5: (3 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 60 dc
Rnd 6: (4 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 72 dc
Rnd 7: (5 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 84 dc
Rnd 8: (6 dc, dc inc in next st) x 12. Join first dc, ch 2= 96 dc
*if you want a bigger bag, keep on increasing with 12 stitches for each round*
The chain 4 counts as one treble crochet.
Rnd 9: Ch 7 (counts as on tr plus ch3), skip 2 dc (do not count the ch7), 1 sc in next dc, ch 3. * skip 2 dc, 1 tr in the next dc, ch 3. Skip 2 dc, 1 sc in the next dc, ch 3*. Repeat from *-* until the end of the round, until you have 2 sts left. Ch 3, sl st in the 4th ch to finish the round. = 16 trc, 16 sc
Rnd 10: Ch 3 (counts as 1 sc plus ch2), 1 tr in next sc, ch2. *1 sc in next tr, ch 2. 1 tr in next sc, ch2. * Repeat *-* until the end of the round. SL st in the first ch to finish this rnd. = 16 trc, 16 sc
Rnd 11: Ch 7 (counts as 1 tr plus ch3), 1 sc in next tr. Ch 3, 1 tr in the next sc. * ch 3, 1 sc in the next tr, ch 3, 1 trc in next sc, ch 3, 1 sc in next tr*. Repeat from *-* until end of the round, until you have 2 ch left. Ch 3, sl st in the 4th ch to finish the round. = 16 tr, 16 sc
Rnd 12: Repeat round 10.
Rnd 13: Repeat round 11.
Further rounds: Repeat rnd 10 and 11 until you get the high you prefer. I did 18 rounds. Be sure to end on round 11 to continue.
Rnd 25: Ch 1. 2 sc in every ch sp. Repeat around the whole bag. Sl st in the first sc. Do not cut the yarn, but continue with the handle. = 64 sc
Handle
R 1: Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 8 sts, ch 1 turn
R 2- 53: 1 sc in every st, ch 1 turn = 8 sc
Just make lesser/more rows if you want your handle to be bigger/smaller. End on an odd row to make finishing easier. Join the handle on the other side with slip stitches. Make sure that there are about the same amount if stitches on each side.
