It takes lots of practice to learn how to crochet!
In the beginning, it can be very frustrating to see how beautiful and perfect the works of others are. But remember, if behind that work lies years of practicing!
So patient with yourself, it takes time to learn and lots of practice. Your stitches won’t be perfect in the beginning, it will take time and effort to get there. But, I don’t want you to focus on being perfect. Just have fun with it!
Crochet to relax and enjoy your self and the rest will come!
Don’t compare yourself to others, everyone has their own style and we are good at different things. Some learn really fast and some need to practice more.
Learning the basics before jumping on to a pattern!
Learn the basics first, then you can go and follow a pattern. There are great patterns here on YouTube and on blogs, but they don’t always explain every stitch in detail.
So, learn the basics first, how to do a ring, how to crochet in rounds and rows. How to increase and decrease. Then you can go and follow a basic and easy pattern. Do not go for the most complicated stuff at first, but try and go for the easy patterns’ with a very little shaping.

Count your stitches!
When I was new, I didn’t always count my stitches, that was a big mistake. It only takes a minute and can save you lots of time later. Imagining making a sweater having to unravel much because the stitch count isn’t right.
It’s okay to cheat (a little)!
If your work is just off with one or two stitches, you may be able to cheat! If it’s not too obvious, just add an extra stitch here and there. Most of the time, only you will notice.
The hooks
Some hooks are better than others. However, the best ones aren’t always the most expensive ones.
Consider buying various sizes from different brands and see what you like the best.
After trying many different hooks, I fell in love with the hooks from Clover amour and Tulip!
When deciding for a hook, try and find one who is ergonomic and one that is easy to work with. I didn’t believe it at first, but there is a difference to how good the yarn glides!
I love my Clover amour hooks because they are easy to work with and nice to hold. But this is my opinion, you go for what you like the best!
The yarn
When starting out, it can be so tempting to buy ALL the yarn! Let’s be honest, there are so many pretty yarns out there!
Try and hold back a little and use up what you have first. Yarn is expensive and it’s important not to waste it.
I try and collect my yarn and make scrap projects of it. If it has been lying around too long, I simply donate it.
Take care of your wrist!
As you may know, I love making amigurumi. Sadly, making amigurumi can be very hard on your wrist. After a few years of crocheting, I started to suffer from wrist pain.
This is something many crocheters and knitters experience sooner or later.
I eventually went to the doctor and I am so glad I treaded it. She gave me important tips on how to prevent it and told me, that for my condition, it was better to cool down the wrist instead of using heat as I have done.
I bought my self wrist support and took longer breaks. That really helped and now I rarely have problems.
So if you experience problems in the future, it is important to do go to the doctor and find the source and then treat it as soon as possible!
So that was my tips and tricks!
I hope that you learned something new and that you’ll ready to start your first crochet project soon!
