Today I am sharing a pattern for a warm and cozy crochet shrug! This is my second pattern for a crochet wearable and I hope that you will like it! It is still cold outside (at least where I live) and this shrug will definitely keep you warm!
Take a look at last week’s pattern, the Lavender Delight! It will go great with this shrug!
The crochet shrug is very easy to make and you basically just need to make a rectangle and crochet a little bit around it. Afterward, you sew or crochet the armholes together (however you prefer) and you are good to go!
I strongly suggest that you make a swatch using the pattern repeat before you start (look at the pattern graph). If your swatch is bigger than what the pattern states, then use a smaller hook and reverse if it is smaller!
I know, swatches aren’t so fun to make but believe me, it is much better than to make the whole shrug and realize that it is too big or small! Then you have to unravel everything and that isn’t fun at all.
I had to do that a couple of times and believe me, I wish I had taken 15 minutes’ time to make that swatch. So learn from my mistakes and make a swatch!
The yarn
I used yarn from Drops Design, it is called Drops Nepal and it is incredibly warm and it looks so luxurious. I actually bought this yarn last year and it has been waiting in my stash for me to make a garment out of it.
It took me some time, but I did it!
I realize that it is hard for people in the US to purchase this yarn since it is a Norwegian brand and mostly sold in Europe.
Have you heard of Yarnsub? Just type in Drops Nepal and you get many suggestions on which yarn you can use. I love that page and I am using it all the time since I can’t get all the American brands here in Germany and there I can search for substitutes.
I also found this yarn from Lion Brand that is very similar to the yarn that this pattern uses. They have some many beautiful colors too!
“Seelenwärmer”
I love how Germans comes up with fun and original words!
The Germans have such a genius word for a shrug, they say “Seelenwärmer” which means soul warmer.
The Germans have many clever words like that and it sounds so much better than shrug, don’t you think? It not only keeps your body warm but also your soul – so they call it a Seelenwärmer. I love it! See, now you learned a little German, too!
I’ve had this pattern tested and I want to thank all my testers for their help! The shrug/soul warmer on the picture has a little more tight fit.
The shrug on the picture is 85 cm wide, but I wanted it a little bigger. I made two different sizes, one for S/M which is about 95 cm wide, and one for L/XL that has about 110 cm. You can also make it even wider if you like.

| The shrug consists of one rectangular piece. The shrug is being crocheted with the stitch pattern shown in the graph above. Afterward, the side parts are being crocheted with dc. In the end, the corners are folded together and armholes are sewn in. For a nice finish, the opening is being crocheted with front and back post double crochet. The stitch counts for the number without parentheses are the sizes for S/M |

Row 1: Ch 105 (123), 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain = 104 (122) sc
Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc through the entire pattern), in the next stitch; *(1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc), skip one sc * rep from *-* until end of row. 1 dc in last sc.= 51 (60) groups of (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)
Row 3: ch 3, in next ch sp. (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). Rep until end of row. 1 dc on top of chain 3. = 51 (60) groups of (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc)
Row 4-43 (49): Repeat row three for 39 (45) rows. = 51 (60) groups of (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). If you are short, you can stop after row 39.
Fasten yarn and weave in ends.
Lay the piece in front of you. Fasten yarn in the left corner, ch 3 (does not cound as on dc). 2 dc around each ch 3 across the entire row = 78 (90) dc
Repeat on the opposite side.
If you want your shrug to be wider. Ch 3 and dc in BLO for 1 more row. Repeat on the opposite side.
Lay the shrug on the floor and fold in the corners together like on the picture
Whip stitch pieces together. For sizes S/M leave 19 cm open and 21 cm for size L
First sew hole for the arms (red marker)
Attach yarn at the beginning from where the black arrow is. Ch 3, dc in next st and around, sl st to join in top of ch. Chain 3, 1 in the next st fpdc, bpdc in the next. Repeat all around. Sl stitch to join in top of chain 3. Repeat 2 more rounds.
Sew on a big button (optional) in the middle on the same level where the arms are.
