In today’s blog post, I am gonna show you how to crochet a granny square shawl. This is a shawl for beginners and more advanced crocheters. So if you are looking for an easy and beginner-friendly shawl, you have come to the right place!
If you aren’t completely new to crocheting, I am sure you have heard of this pattern before. But each granny shawl looks different, depending on which yarn and colors you choose. So I thought I would show mine!
Also, the granny square shawl is a true classic, and it never get’s boring!
Moreover, this is prefect for each time of the year too! You can work with light cotton yarn for spring and summer and wool yarn for the fall and winter!
Materials
My granny square shawl is worked with an alpaca blend and with a worsted weight yarn. Also, I worked with two different colors, nature and blue, which gave it a nice and neutral look. The yarn that I picked for my shawl is a yarn that I bought in Norway, and I think that they stopped producing it as well.
However, there are similar yarns for you to choose from if you want an alpaca blend too! But really you can use all kinds of yarn for this project! Also, you could use a yarn cake!
But before you go ahead and buy new yarn, you can check your yarn stash! It is certainly a stash busting pattern!
When I was making this shawl, I noticed that it has a very nice drape. This is because of the texture with the chain one space that this pattern uses.

Notes:
The ch 3 in the beginning of each row counts as 1 dc, plus a chain 1 (=4 ch)
To change color. For a smooth color change, do it on the last pull through on the last dc at the end of the row.
US therms
ch – chain
yo – yarn over
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
ch1sp – chain 1 space
ch3sp – chain 3 space
dc – double crochet

- A hook that matches your yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Instructions
Step 1: Make a magic ring, or chain 4, join with a sl st in the first ch. Ch 4, 3 dc, ch 3 (this is the middle). 3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in the ring. Pull the ring closed, turn
Step 2:
Ch 4, 3 dc in the first ch1sp, ch 1. In the ch3sp; 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1. 3 dc in the last ch 1 sp. Ch 1, 1 dc, turn
Step 3
Ch 4, 3 dc in the first ch1sp, ch 1. 3 dc in the next ch1sp, ch 1. In the ch3sp; 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1. 3 dc in the next ch1sp, ch 1. 3 dc in the last ch1sp, ch 1, 1 dc, turn
Continue in this matter. For each row you have one more chain 1 spaces.

Would a treble crochet work better than the double? I think the treble would not curl so much.
You can sure try:) I think that would work well. If you have trouble with curling, maybe you should consider using a slightly bigger hook? It could be that you crochet too tight. 🙂
