Willow Granny Square Christmas Tree. Free Crochet Pattern
Did you know you can turn a Willow Granny Square into a beautiful little Christmas tree?

Today I'm sharing a fun Christmas version of the classic Willow Granny Square! With no extra rounds and a few simple folds, you can turn this pretty crochet square into a lovely Christmas tree ornament.
I love how the Willow pattern creates so much texture, and the decorative stitches give the tree a beautiful look.
These little trees are perfect for decorating your Christmas tree, adding to handmade gifts, or making a few extra Christmas decorations for your home. And the best part? You only need yarn, a crochet hook, and a little time!

A Christmas Twist on the Willow Granny Square
The Willow Granny Square has always been one of my favorite crochet squares. It has a beautiful floral design in the center, surrounded by decorative stitches that make it stand out.
For this Christmas project, I wanted to try something a little different.
Instead of using the square for a blanket or another larger project, I added two extra rounds and folded it into a Christmas tree shape.

The result is a lovely little ornament that looks much more complicated than it actually is!
I used soft green yarn and added a small tree trunk wrapped in natural twine. The third tree was made with beige yarn, and I finished with one in red. I'm also thinking it would be fun to make one in multiple colors. At last, made a simple hanging loop so you can use the tree as a Christmas ornament.
You can keep your tree simple like mine or decorate it with a small bow, beads, or other Christmas decorations.

Materials You'll Need
- Cotton yarn in your favorite Christmas tree color
- A crochet hook suitable for your yarn
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Natural twine or jute cord for the hanging loop and tree trunk
- A small twig for the tree trunk, or cinnamon stick (optional)
You can also use leftover yarn from other crochet projects. These little Christmas trees are a fun way to use up your yarn scraps!
Willow Granny Square Christmas Tree Video Tutorial
I have made a step-by-step video tutorial showing you how to crochet the Willow Granny Square and turn it into a Christmas tree.
I'll guide you through the entire process, from the magic ring to the finished Christmas ornament.
How to Crochet the Willow Granny Square Christmas Tree
We start by making the classic Willow Granny Square. Follow the written pattern here.
The first rounds create the beautiful floral center, and the following rounds turn the circle into a square.
For this Christmas tree version, we'll add two extra rounds to make the square a little larger before folding it into a tree.
Part 1: Crochet the Willow Granny Square
Follow Rounds 1–8 of the Willow Granny Square Pattern.
After completing the original square, you'll be ready to fold it into a tree! If you want to make it slightly larger, just add two rounds of double crochet at the end

Part 2: Fold the Square into a Christmas Tree
Now comes the fun part!
Once you've finished crocheting the square, turn it into a Christmas tree.
Fold the square to create a triangular tree shape, arranging the layers so the decorative Willow stitches are visible.
Adjust the folds until you're happy with the shape.
Use your yarn needle and matching yarn to secure the layers so the tree keeps its shape.

Part 3: Add the Tree Trunk and Hanging Loop
To finish your crochet Christmas tree ornament, add a small trunk at the bottom.
I used a small piece of twig wrapped with natural twine. I love how the natural materials look together with the green cotton yarn! A cinnamon stick will also look good!
Secure the trunk to the back of the tree.
Next, attach a loop of twine to the top so you can hang your ornament.
You can also add a small bow if you prefer a more decorative look.

Ideas for Decorating Your Crochet Christmas Tree
There are so many ways to make these little Christmas trees your own.
Try making them in different shades of green, or use white yarn for a snowy Christmas look.
You could also add tiny beads, a star at the top, or a small ribbon bow.
I love the simple look of green yarn paired with natural twine. It gives the ornament a cozy, rustic Christmas feeling.
What Can You Use These Crochet Christmas Trees For?
These handmade Christmas trees aren't just for hanging on your Christmas tree!
They also make lovely gift toppers. Simply attach one to a wrapped Christmas present for an extra handmade touch.
You could also use them to decorate a Christmas wreath, hang them in a window, or make several for a handmade Christmas garland.
And because they're small, they're a fun project to make for friends and family.
