How to crochet for beginners

Where do I start?

I know, the beginning can be overwhelming when you want to learn something new. Start with the basics, like how to make a chain and do single crochet and crochet in the round.

This is all very easy and below there is a video that will take you through these steps. When you have completed the first video and practiced how to make a little ball, you are ready to make your first animal.

Start with something easy with little shaping.

What do I need?

In the beginning you don't need so much yarn. As a beginner it is good to just get a few skeins of some colors that you like. Find a yarn that dosen't split, as these yarns can be harder to crochet with. I prefer cotton yarn for my amigurumi. However you can also use acrylic yarn or milk fibre.

I suggest starting with hooks that aren't too inexpensive. There are a lot of good quality hooks that don't cost too much. Here are some hooks for you to check out.

For beginners, it is easy and convenient to follow a pattern from a YouTube video. You will get familiar with the basic stitches, how to hold your hook, where to insert your hook, and such.

After this the first video you are ready to make your first project! I'd suggest making these cute mice! They are very easy to make. If you want to see how the pattern is written, you can check out this blog post.

The magic ring

The magic ring is very useful to know and you can use it for many different projects, not only when making amigurumi.

Here is my preferred method. If you find my method difficult, I suggest you search on YouTube until you find one that you like.

When learning something new it takes time and practice before you'll be able to master the new skill. So don't feel discouraged if your work doesn't look as you imagined it to look.

Do not compare yourself to others. We all learn at a different pace some have more talent and some have less. Some learn after a few hours of practicing and some need months or years.

I thought my neighbor crocheting and she learned really fast! Her work is even and she learns it so fast. But her disadvantage is that she keeps forgetting the stitches, so she has to look it up each time.

My colleague wanted to learn to crochet, but she gave up as she was not able to make a chain. So crocheting isn't for everyone! That's okay. We all have different skills and talents.

My journey to crocheting

I wish I had a picture of my first attempt. It was not pretty, my stitches were uneven and I was too lazy to count. I had to learn to be accurate and patient.

However, eventually, I was able to make a hat for my baby. Then I made a blanket and from there on I was hooked!

Then, after 5 years, I started to make my own patterns and now I make some dollars off my hobby! How awesome is that!

Always educate yourself.

If I were to give you one piece of advice, it would be this: Always educate yourself. With crocheting, there is always something to learn and it is important to practice your skills on a regular basis.

Even if you only can make time for a few minutes of crocheting every day. Just keep practicing and never give up.

Sharing is caring!
